Planned Parenthood means forced abortions for Chinese women

Mother tells Al Jazeera how her foetus was terminated at eight months after she violated the one-child policy.

At the time of this picture the baby had already been given a lethal injection

China's one child policy

In this exclusive report by Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan, we look at a Chinese woman ordeal. As she was forced to abort her eight month baby, because she violated China's one child policy.

Forced abortions for Chinese women

China's one-child policy leads to an estimated 13 million reported abortions every year, with many of those ordered by the authorities enforcing the system.

Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan gained access to a hospital in the southeastern city of Xiamen, where she found one mother in a terrible condition.

Xiao Ai Ying was forced to have an abortion eight months into her pregnancy because she already has a ten-year-old girl.

Forced abortions sometimes happen in remote areas of China, but this one occurred in one of the country's most modern cities. They are not condoned by the central government.

Mothers who violate China's one-child policy usually pay a fine anywhere from $1 to $40,000, but are then often sterilised to prevent them from having another child.

Although the officials figures of 13 million abortions seem high, physicians and medical researchers quoted by the state-run newspaper China Daily on Thursday said that once unreported and medication-induced abortions are counted, the actual number is substantially higher.

The rate of abortion in China is about 24 abortions for every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44, the World Health Organisation and the Guttmacher Institute said in a joint report.

In 2003, the report put the number of abortions in China at nine million, out of a total of 42 million worldwide.

Al Jazeera approached Chinese authorities in Xiamen for comment on this story, but they declined to speak to us.

China's population policy draws wide praise - People's Daily Online
September 29, 2009

Demographers and scholars worldwide have spoken highly of China's family-planning policy over the past 30 years and more, saying it has helped lower the world population growth.

"We know that China, being the most populous country in the world, is especially important in the area of population," said Hania Zlotnik, director of the Population Division of the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

Whatever happens in China has a great impact on world population, and certainly on the population in the developing world, she explained.

"Thanks to the changes in fertility, especially in China, the growth rate of the world population (and) of the developing country population is a quarter of a point lower today than it would have been if China did not have such a big drop in family size," she said in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua.

China's family planning policy, which requires most couples have one child in urban areas and two in rural areas, has been in effect for more than three decades. It has helped prevent an estimated 400 million births. That means if China had not implemented its family planning policy, its total population would have exceeded 1.7 billion in 2008.

"So it's a much more complex policy than the slogan of one child per woman. Therefore, China doesn't have, at this moment, one of the lowest fertility in the world," she said. "It has a moderately low fertility. It is being lowered and that is an achievement."

Gill Greer, director-general of the London-based International Planned Parenthood Federation, told Xinhua in a recent interview that the family planning policy has contributed a great deal to China's remarkable economic and social achievements over the past 30 years.

By adopting the population control policy, Greer said, China has reduced its population growth rate and alleviated problems from overpopulation.

"Thus, the policy is very conducive to China's development in various aspects such as economy, education and health care services," she said.

American scholar Barbara Pillsbury, who has worked for the United Nations Population Agency, shared similar views with Greer.

"China won't have achieved so much in the country's development if it did not pursue its population control policy," she said.

Pillsbury compared China's population policy with India and said China has successfully controlled its population while India's population will increase dramatically.

She predicted that by 2040, India will surpass China as the world's most populous country with 1.52 billion people, while China's population is expected to stand at 1.45 billion.

Carl Haub, a senior demographer at the non-profit Population Reference Bureau, based in Washington DC, told Xinhua that birth planning, a basic national policy that China has stuck to for over30 years, has helped reduce the country's population growth rate.

"It has not only lowered China's demand for resources from outside the country, but also relieved pressure on the domestic labor market," he said.

In this way, the Chinese government could focus its efforts on providing better material conditions for its people, and improving their living standards," he said.

What does NOW (National Organization for Women) have to say about women being forced to have abortions in China? For an organization that purports to defend women's rights world-wide, they are strangely silent. After an exhausting search of their website the only thing I could come up with is a "legislative update" warning about the danger of restrictions on funding for UNFPA (United Nations Fund for Population Assistance) in China.
Finally, this dangerous amendment denies U.S. contributions to the United Nations Fund for Population Assistance (UNFPA) unless the president certifies that UNFPA has stopped all program activities in China. This latter provision is related to reports of coerced abortions in China. Reps. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Ben Gilman (R-NY), Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Jim Greenwood (R-PA) tried in vain to pass a substitute amendment that would have countered many of Smith's bad provisions, but this failed by a vote of 218-210.

Urge your member of the House of Representatives to support of international family planning programs without the Mexico City gag rule and any other constraints concerning abortion. The health of women in many developing countries is dependent upon programs which the U.S. helps to support and these women deserve to have full reproductive health information and services.
This statement from NOW was under the section for "reproductive rights". These rights as defined by NOW apparently don't include the right of women in China to choose to keep their babies when that conflicts with China's eugenic birth control policies. I challenge anyone to provide evidence that NOW has ever condemned China's forced sterilization or abortion policies. Just like Planned Parenthood – whose founder, Margaret Sanger, NOW credits as one of the founders of the women's movement – NOW is a pro-eugenic organization. Their uninhibited advocacy of abortion is in keeping with their elitist, pro-eugenic agenda.

  1. I found this Al Jazeera report on a forced abortion in China and decided to include it without editing the wording. I've juxtaposed an article from the Chinese press which demonstrates the wide and uncritical support there is for their brutal policies.

While groups like NOW which pretend to defend "women's rights" have remained silent on the issue of China's "family planning" practices, the Catholic Church has consistently condemned abortion and artificial contraception.

With this graphic demonstration of the very real excesses of China's "one child" policy, will NOW finally speak out? I doubt it. It is not consistent with their agenda to condemn abortion under *any* circumstances. Doing so would dilute their message and "confuse" their followers. Contraception and abortion must be held up as absolutely good.

The leadership of NOW would say that any denouncement of forced sterilization or forced abortion can only give strength to their opponent's arguments. But it's more than that. As a pro-eugenic organization, they fully support the Chinese government's actions. Any excesses that result are "regrettable" but acceptable in order to achieve the goals of their organization. This is in keeping with the Marxist thinking of NOW's founders.

  2. P.S. Wherever I wrote "NOW" in the comment above, you can also substitute "Planned Parenthood". Their goals are pretty much equivalent. That's not surprising since they each trace their origins back to eugenicist Margaret Sanger.

  3. I neglected to add previously that we should all pray for the baby, the mother and the father. What will be the fate of this family?

And also I want to give thanks to Melissa Chan who is the reporter on this story. How many of us would have the courage to defy the public authorities to reveal the truth in this way?

You can read more about how this story came to light at Melissa's blog.

Luo Yan Qua and Xiao Ai Ying do not know how their story got posted on the internet. They were too distraught and shocked to have even considered reaching out to media as an option.

There is the possibility that someone in the government, aware of their situation and sympathetic, quietly released information about them on a popular Chinese website which works in the same way Twitter does.

Their story is macabre. Family Planning officials decided Xiao Ai Ying, eight months into her pregnancy, had violated China's one-child policy and forced her to have an abortion.

The couple already have a daughter and this second pregnancy was accidental, but when it was confirmed three months in, husband and wife both felt it was too late to have an abortion and assumed the most that could happen to them was a heavy fine.

Instead, Xiao Ai Ying was dragged kicking and screaming out of her own home by authorities.

What we have posted here is eight minutes of the interview we had with her husband, Luo Yan Qua, recounting the events. While there was not enough time to broadcast this interview on the channel, we felt his words so compelling that they merited being heard in full and have made this a web exclusive.

When we met wife Xiao Ai Ying, she was in the hospital. They had given her womb an injection, and she was waiting for the operation in which doctors would remove the dead foetus. Our report as it aired on the channel, is below.

  5. I've seen a lot more horrible things happening in China. I just don't understand how it is that liberals and progressives get to praise Chinese totalitarian dictatorship on TV and do not get majorly bashed by the people.

The detractors of the Chinese dictatorship face executions, illegal imprisonments, kidnappings, etc. Chinese make Nazis look like a bunch of peace lovers Spongebob and Mickey Mouse.

I pray to God that the red dragon is stopped one day. Kudos for your article!

Have you ever heard about the Armenian Genocide? there are so many many genocides which haven't been properly documented because of political reasons.

    God bless!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yes, I know about the Armenian Genocide.

I don't know if you're aware of how the Irish were slaughtered and starved to death by the British under Cromwell in the 1600's. Around 40% of the population, mostly Catholic, died as a result. And after that they were stripped of their lands, which was handed over to English Protestants.

In the 20th century, the Ukrainian Holodomor under Stalin caused the death of ten million through the same tactics of murder and starvation. At the same time the atheist Marxist regime destroyed Christian churches - both Orthodox and Catholic.

Starving a population to death is a particularly cruel form of genocide. And later the deaths can be attributed to "natural causes".

  7. I noticed that in the Al Jazeera article it says, "They [forced abortions] are not condoned by the central government."

I don't believe this and frankly I can't see how this can be true. I think the inclusion of this statement is a result of censorship - either enforced by China's government or self-censorship. Otherwise, how would the local authorities dare to do this, knowing that the family would take their complaints to the highest authority?

The other reason this statement makes no sense is because it is not a new occurrence. I found another report from 1980, that describes the same procedure. A pregnant mother is given an injection which kills the child in the womb.

    The video is here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT7JOGz8ILk
"I was present when women 7, 8, 9 months pregnant... were given lethal injections into the womb to kill the unborn child."

For more information visit the Population Research Institute website. This is a pro-life group headed by Steven W. Mosher who is Catholic.

I'm also discovering the link between international aid and eugenics in the form of forcing less developed countries to implement contraception programs. There are also deliberate policies that disrupt food production and result in famines.

There is a very good article here titled "The Inherent Racism of Population Control":
    http://www.lifesitenews.com/waronfamily/Population_Control/Inherentracism.pdf
This article is from LifeSiteNews.com, which is a pro-life group. It's very well researched and makes the link between groups like the World Bank, the UNFPA, Planned Parenthood, and others.

  8. Baba unfortunately history is plagued with cruel genocides to exterminate Catholics, plenty have happened, and none of them ever gets major attention in the media, why? Because apparently for Americans and Protestants it is ok to kill Catholics.

Just to mention a few more, besides the ones you have mentioned, hundreds killed in India day by day, in Pakistan, in the Middle East, thousands killed in the 'Cristero' war in Mexico, the Mexican and Irish people killing by the freemasons back during the American invasion to Mexico, among many others, and in almost every case the American Freemasons had something to do with that.

I know you don't like to talk about it, but Freemasons are and will always be declared enemies of the Catholic Church.

There is a lot going on in Africa too, they kill people and sterilize them with vaccines. The problem is that there is so much information which never really gets to be listened or seen by the masses mostly because satanists always try to cover up their killings.

  9. Hi Paco. I just changed my online name to Michael. I know this will cause some confusion, but I think it is necessary. I chose Michael in honor of St. Michael the Archangel. There is more information in the "About" section.

Did you know there is a movie coming out about the Cristero war in Mexico? It is called "Cristiada" and is scheduled to come out in 2011. Here is a short clip of the filming.

I understand your point about the Freemasons. You are correct that their organization has been condemned by the Catholic Church. But Freemasons have just been part of a larger secular humanist movement. It is not always a unified movement as we saw when capitalism and communism battled each other in the 20th century.

I have been reading about the origins of this humanist movement. During the Renaissance there was a renewed interest in Greek and Roman ideas. (In fact I am beginning to think that the Protestant Reformation sprang out of these ideas.) There is a steady progression from liberalism to atheism as these pagan ideas have been adopted. There is an interesting (but very long) article here. (Actually I think its a book that has been posted online.):
History of the Catholic Church, Renaissance to French Revolution

The justification for this denial of God is based on a materialist philosophy which glorifies rational thinking. In so doing it denies the existence of a spiritual world that touches us in our daily lives; it denies that Christ was God in the flesh; it denies the existence of Heaven and Hell. This is very easy to do from a "scientific" perspective, but it is nonetheless a false teaching.

As people come to realize that science does not contain the whole truth, they search in vain for an alternative to Christianity. This is reflected in the whole New Age movement. And since the Protestant churches were founded upon humanist ideas, their relevance has steadily eroded.

Only the Catholic Church (and Orthodox?) has steadily resisted the temptation to conform to the humanist teachings with regards to the very nature of human life. This is the proof that the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes, 'Michael' hehe, Freemasonry is based on liberalism on the surface, however, plenty faithful Catholics have studied this 'organization' and it is darker than what it even looks like.

And yes, Catholic Church and Orthodox have been the only two fighting against all these evil 'trends'. Thus why the Orthodox Churches are about to come back to the Catholic Church. A clear sign of the times.

As usual, your comments do reflect how deep of an analysis you have made. I do recommend you read about Apologetic. It would be so good to have an ally like you on the battlefield! :)

  12. Hi Baba, this is a shocking report, but now, due to my personal experience of working at an abortion clinic, I am not surprised. I'm quoting "Although the officials figures of 13 million abortions seem high, physicians and medical researchers quoted by the state-run newspaper China Daily on Thursday said that once unreported and medication-induced abortions are counted, the actual number is substantially higher." unquote...
I know for a fact, in my country, there are no 'real statistics being recorded for abortions so the number is going to be much higher than the 'measured' amount that government's like to talk about. The truth is far more horrific.

    Marty

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hi Marty. It is shameful that the "women's movement" has made abortion a matter of dogma. In the US the Democratic Party has made abortion part of its political platform. The eugenic aspects of this cannot be denied.

I was just reading that in the past few years Amnesty International has made abortion part of its official agenda. This is especially saddening because AI was founded by Peter Benenson, a Catholic convert from Judaism. And was initially noted for being a strongly Christian organization.
Amnesty International pressures Peru to legalize abortion

In the US there are about 1 million abortions every year. This is a startling figure which belies the idea that abortion is a relatively rare occurrence. Did 1 million women freely make the "choice" to have an abortion? Planned Parenthood itself performs hundreds of thousands of these abortions. What kind of doctor would dedicate himself to becoming an abortionist? Excuse me for thinking that this reminds me of Nazi doctors that conducted cruel and inhumane experiments on prisoners.

It seems to me that there is a growing pro-life movement that is making itself heard in the elections. I'm expecting that we will see some surprising results this November in the US elections. Democrats have taken for granted the Catholic vote, but now they will finally be forced to decide between the support of the pro-abortion movement or the pro-life movement.

Here is an inspiring talk by a woman that converted to Catholicism and at the same time converted from pro-"choice" to pro-life.

I did notice that in my neighborhood hardly anyone put up Halloween decorations this year. Maybe everyone is getting a little tired of witches, vampires and werewolves. Ha!

  16. Funny you should say that Michael (about Halloween). My city and other surrounding cities designated Halloween Eve as trick-or-treat night. Not that I would have let my daughter wear a costume to go out and petition candy from strangers anyway...but, they threw me for a loop when they mandated what night to trick-or-treat. No wonder I didn't see any little ghouls walking around...they were out the night before! lol

  18. Hi Paco. Sorry, I've been distracted. I was watching the Pope in Spain. I had a feeling that as he was sanctifying the Sagrada Familia Basilica, that he was also exorcising the demons from all of Europe.

I don't know if you've heard about Zapatero, the socialist Prime Minister of Spain and his anti-church policies. He snubbed the Pope by not greeting him as he arrived in Spain. But the Spanish royal family has been very supportive of the Pope's trip.

The European Union is driving a lot of the anti-Church legislation in Spain. There are people that want to use anti-discrimination laws against the Church to force them to allow "woman priests" or "gay marriage". This is one of the dangers of over emphasizing women's "rights" or gay "rights". At some point these "rights" can be elevated to a point where they are placed above the right to freedom of religion.

The Pope spoke a great deal about "freedom" and what it really means. I believe it was actually his central theme on this trip. He made the same points that I discussed in my article "Pope Leo XIII on Freedom".

It's sad that many of the people of Europe have lost touch with the Holy Spirit. It's interesting to hear that the Sagrada Familia Basilica was initially dedicated to St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. And I don't have to tell you that Sagrada Familia means Holy Family - Joseph, Mary and Jesus.

As Christians we need to realize the importance of the family. Everything that we teach our children about love and sexual relationships ultimately is reflected in the families that they will create. We have seen the fruits of the sexual liberalization of society, and while it has resulted in greater sexual "freedom" there has been a price paid in the deterioration of the family.
