Turn off the radio

Hi y'all. It occurs to me that we need an alternative to music by and for the corporate media. I could talk about boycotting the recording industry, but we all need music in our lives, right? To fill our souls. They know that and we know that. Especially young people. They need to have their own music that they can identify with. That will mark their days as they grow into adulthood. Music that will be the soundtrack of their lives. They know that and we know that.

But it doesn't have to be the stuff that the corporate music industry digs up and packages and promotes. The thinly disguised death and destruction that they sell to our sweet and vibrant youth.

And there are alternatives out there. Definitely. I'm sure you know people that have talent. You know, you can make your own music. It may not be auto-tuned to pitch perfection or have a thumping bass line. Or feature a ten minute 5 million dollar video with special effects.

It may not be all that, but if it's real that's all that counts.

We're  talking about being human, and being human means being imperfect. It means never doing it the same way twice. It means making mistakes. And saying "I'm sorry". Nobody's perfect.

So I invite you to share with us your favorite musician that we may not have heard of. The one that never signed a big recording contract or never gets played on the radio. The one that you go to listen to every weekend at your favorite local club or dive.

Or it could just be you and your friends posting up a video on YouTube.

So here's somebody that I've enjoyed for a while. I had kind of forgotten about her. Probably because her songs never play on the radio.

Kina Grannis

You may have heard of Kina. She had some moderates success with a song called "Message from your heart" which she played in a superbowl commercial. And she had an internet sensation with Gotta Digg. Despite that she was never signed to a big recording contract. She's been blogging for a while and I think she was the person that inspired me to start my first blog. Here's a little video to get to know her.

And this is her latest single called Valentine.

And this is one of my favorites because she is singing here with her two sisters.

Kina is a busy woman. She still maintains her blog where she regularly wishes happy birthday to her fans. Here are some links for you to explore to get to know Kina and her music better.

Kina's blog
Her home page
Her YouTube channel

I hope some of you will visit her sites and maybe download her music. And hopefully she won't feel the need to change as she becomes more popular.

P.S. Avatar

Tomorrow is the Avatar DVD release on Earth Day. Yeah, right. I don't think that requires a comment. We're still planning to do some articles on Avatar. LVB and I have just been pretty busy the last few days with his article over at VC's making such a big splash.

Thanks to all of you for spreading the word about Public Vigil. I've been noticing various links to our site when I do vanity searches on Google. We're tackling the future - one transhumanist myth at a time.

  1. Ride - I have to tell you that I hesitated before recommending Kina's music. Knowing how much music has been corrupted. But she seems like a pure spirit and one day maybe she will share something with us that will reveal her faith in God. In fact I just realized the name of the song she covers with her sisters in the video above is "God in my bed". I'm not sure that is the most positive message.

I was kind of disappointed when I checked out the Sara Bareilles song you linked to and heard them talking about how they wrote "Winter song" and making fun of writing Christmas songs about Jesus. This is the sort of way that radical secularization has made us feel guilty about associating Jesus with Christmas. I have nothing against "Frosty the snow man" or "Rudolph the Reindeer" but these are not what Christmas is about. Give me "Silent Night" any day.

And while it's true that Christmas occurs at the time of the winter solstice and the celebration incorporates some pagan traditions, that is not what Christmas is about. The Christian Church does adopt some pre-Christian traditions and symbols in order to give them new meaning. In so doing it cleanses and purifies them as we are cleansed in the blood of Christ, the lamb of God. There is power in symbolism and by embracing these symbols in a transformative way, rather than simply rejecting them, the Church has harnessed that power for good.

I think you have the right idea. Keep searching. And let God be your guide. "Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you." Mathew 7:7

  2. I never thought about it, I'm actually, really surprised, thank you baba.

I was also watching some videos of Kinna, I'll look for her music, she is talented. It's nice when you find that kind of artist that you can listen freely and not worrying about wrong messages, which seems sometimes difficult. It makes me really happy when I find positive music.

I have my radio turned off, but I still have be careful with the music that I listen to. Underground is not always good.

  3. Hey, I just recently came across this blog (through a link on Vigilant Citizen's site) and I've really enjoyed many of the articles so far.

I'm a born-again Christian, and I can see a lot of end times prophecy being fulfilled in the way things are going in the music industry, all of the natural disasters (earthquakes, volcano, etc.) lately, etc.

I look at all of this stuff through a Biblical perspective, and really, it just reinforces the fact that Satan is still alive today, and he is really working hard on his "master plan" since he knows he only has so much time left on earth before he gets locked up. I can't wait to see the day when that happens, honestly! It's so good to know that Jesus Christ (and anyone who accepts him) wins at the end. Revelation is an awesome book for the believer, but it does show how scary this world will become before it is all over.

  4. Ride - I'm glad that you weren't offended by my comment. I honestly think we can listen to any music and just enjoy it for its purely musical qualities if we are strong enough in our faith. I'm not going to go live in a cave in order to protect myself from bad influences. We can learn from the Church and how it has incorporated elements of paganism into its traditions while sanctifying them. We don't have to repudiate rock music for being secular. But we do have to maintain a strong faith in order to not be led off our chosen path. And it does help to be aware of some of the hidden messages in the music that is played on the radio so that we aren't taken by surprise. As it says up at the top of the blog, "willful ignorance may be harmful to your spiritual and mental health".

  5. Kathie - I'm starting to feel like Dear Abby here. LOL. I'm the last person in the world that should be handing out spiritual advice, but here goes anyway.

I know how you feel about the end times prophecies and the events around us. I can only respond that Jesus said (Luke 12:39-40):
"Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."

And in Revelations it says (Revelation 16:15):
"Behold, I am coming like a thief."

And also in 1 Thessalonians 5:2-4:
For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When people are saying, "Peace and security," then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

I don't think we can know when the end times are coming. I don't think there will be a sign that we can recognize. I believe that we should live each day as if it were the last and always be prepared.

I am concerned that the corporate media attempts to spread fear in the Christian community by suggesting that the end of the world may be coming. I know that fear is a powerful psychological weapon which can be used to manipulate people. I know that the transhumanists target their messages at different groups to achieve a maximum psychological impact.

So I don't see any benefit from a Christian perspective in worrying about when the end will come and when Christ will return. And I do see a benefit for those who are trying to destroy Christianity in spreading fears and rumors. The whole campaign around the year 2012 is an example of this.

  6. "Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue".
    -Plato-

It's true, but I still avoid some songs because of their meaning, I believe music can be spiritual. That's why I try to be careful with what I listen to, or at least, being aware.

"Willful ignorance may be harmful to your spiritual and mental health".

I agree with you, that's why I keep reading your blog, I appreciate all your informative work. Thank you for all!

  7. Thanks. I share with you the belief that music is spiritual and that somehow it can touch our very soul. It's one of the great mysteries of the universe, how it can do this. The human voice is the greatest instrument of all, and a mother's lullaby is the greatest song.
